A massive recall of eight popular sauces was recently started by Costco and San Juan Salsa, necessitating prompt action to ensure consumer safety and increase consumer awareness. San Juan Salsa Co.’s cilantro-based salsa was voluntarily recalled at several Costco stores due to potential wood contamination. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also issued an alert, and items in various branches were considered for recall. According to the manufacturer’s notice, the product may contain minute wood particles. A total of eight types were given, with expiration dates ranging from March 3 to May 23, 2025.
Costco has issued a massive recall of popular products for safety reasons
The item supplied by Costco in various of its branches is one of the most popular among customers, with a presentation size of 945 ml, or 32 ounces. Manufacturing of the batch took place from December 19, 2024, until March 17, 2025. The sauces recalled at the retail grocery include the following:
- Mild sauce with an expiration date of March 3–May 23, 2025.
- Medium sauce has an expiration date of between February 27 and May 22, 2025.
- Hot sauce with an expiration date between March 3 and May 23, 2025.
- Also, the traditional sauce will expire between January 29 and April 23, 2025.
- Pineapple mango salsa has an expiration date of March 24 to May 23, 2025.
- Green salsa has an expiration date between January 27 and April 14, 2025.
- Roasted red sauce has an expiration date between March 18, 2025, and May 22, 2025.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), over 43 thousand kilos of SupHerb Farms cilantro, both chopped and whole, had to be withdrawn from Costco and other retailers due to probable wood contamination. In early April, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a contamination alert for a number of soups due to this same ingredient. Produced by San Juan Salsa Co., the frozen food, which also has a health warning, was sold in the states of Washington, Oregon, New York, Massachusetts, California, Michigan, Ohio, Oregon, and Texas.
Should Americans buy Amazon or Costco stock?
Amazon hasn’t had a good year in 2025. Due to the general market decline, its stock has already lost more than 20%. Wells Fargo analysts claim that Amazon has even put a halt to some new data center projects. This is intriguing considering Andy Jassy, the CEO, stated only a few weeks ago that there were no intentions to halt the growth of data centers. On the other hand, Costco Wholesale is demonstrating strength. Its stock has increased by about 7% so far this year, which is comparable to the gains it earned in the first four months of 2024. Thus, Costco appears to be surviving as Amazon stumbles.
What is the best stock to purchase at this time, though, in terms of investing? The response may surprise you. Since Costco’s impact was lower compared to Amazon’s, its results outperformed Amazon’s this year. The latest tariffs imposed by the Trump administration have investors concerned about price increases and a slowing economy. Of course, tariffs have an impact on Costco as well. Lastly, please keep in mind that about one-third of Costco’s U.S. sales are from imported goods, according to CEO Ron Vachris during the company’s fiscal 2025 Q2 earnings call in March 2025. However, he also noted that less than half of those imports come from the nations with the largest tariff hikes—China, Canada, and Mexico.
