Social Security Administration (SSA) beneficiaries should anticipate significant changes next month. This year has seen a number of major changes at the SSA, some of which are anticipated and annual, and others of which are far more innovative. Additionally, some beneficiaries will get duplicate payments next month because of scheduling problems involving Supplementary Security Income. As 2025 approaches its halfway point, it is still unclear what the SSA’s future holds.
The Social Security Administration’s (SSA) new adjustment could impact retirees and disability recipients
Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) just reduced the number of SSA personnel from 57,000 to 50,000. In addition to 12-hour shifts and inflated wait times, this has forced current employees to put in extra hours. Some are more worried about the consequences, while others have applauded the cuts and see them as a long-term reform. Some, however, have pointed out that the large cuts, which only save 0.06% of the federal budget, will inevitably result in delays in the SSA’s beneficiary payment distribution.
If you need to talk with the SSA directly, you may have to wait longer due to ongoing delays at SSA offices next month as a result of these internal SSA adjustments. In addition, it might indicate that there is a chance that payments will be delayed, which has never happened in the SSA’s eight decades of existence. Beneficiaries have received higher payouts for the last four months than they did the previous year due to the COLA rise, even though the new cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) index went into effect in January. The official 2025 COLA data from Social Security reveals that this year’s COLA rise was 2.5 percent. Since before COVID-19, this was one of the lowest COLA adjustments ever observed.
This year, the COLA notice was revised and updated for the first time for Social Security recipients, making it easier for customers to find the information they need most. Furthermore, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will be releasing a double round of payments for certain SSA beneficiaries this month. The SSA administration usually follows a tight schedule when it comes to releasing payments for beneficiaries to plan their monthly expenses without concern for when the payments will hit their bank accounts.
However, these prescheduled dates can occasionally differ significantly, resulting in two payments for beneficiaries in a single month. As June 1st falls on a Sunday, beneficiaries are reminded that this additional payment for May is not a “bonus” payment but rather their June payment, which is disbursed on May 30. If SSA’s regular payment day falls on a weekend or public holiday, payments are always made on the following day. If you do not get your June SSI payment, it is because the additional May payment is being used to account for your June payment, not because your payment was overlooked.
When will the SSA pay beneficiaries this month?
According to the Social Security payment schedule, the SSA will deliver several payments for retired workers, disabled people, and recipients of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program on the following days:
- On May 1st or Thursday, for all beneficiaries who qualify for the Supplemental Security Income program in the US
- On May 2nd, or Friday, for all beneficiaries who claimed benefits before May 1997
- On May 14th or 2nd Wednesday for all RSDI beneficiaries who were born between the 1st and the 10th
- On May 21st or 3rd Wednesday for all RSDI beneficiaries who were born between the 11th and the 20th
- On May 28th or 4th Wednesday for all RSDI beneficiaries who were born between the 21st and the 31st
