No customs and no long lines - American Airlines allows bypassing TSA on connecting flights in the U.S. and here's why

American Airlines, a pioneer in implementing the One Stop Security program in the United States, benefits most from passengers who won’t have to wait long hours. The initiative, developed in conjunction with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and the UK Department for Transport (DfT), is now operational for flights from London Heathrow Airport with connections at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).

The new system reduces connection times by more than half

This innovation doesn’t eliminate immigration screening, but it does make it more fluid, as the entire process occurs before passengers transfer to their next flight. Furthermore, airport staff will transfer baggage directly to the connecting flight, reducing the margin of error and lost luggage. The new system reduces connection times by more than half, resulting in a much smoother and less stressful travel experience.

The new program allows passenger screening to take place directly at the arrival gate, under the supervision of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Previously, or as is done now if traveling with other airlines, normal screening begins upon landing. When passengers depart the plane, they must clear customs, retrieve their checked baggage, return to check-in for the next flight, and once again go through TSA security.

The One Stop Security Program only applies to a specific flight

Passengers disembark, go through immigration at the arrival gate, and continue directly to their connecting flight, without needing to collect or re-check their baggage. All baggage handling is performed automatically, without compromising security standards. All of this is done within the One Stop Security (OSS) framework.

The One Stop Security Program only applies to a specific flight, as American Airlines is considering expanding this policy to other destinations if the results are positive. American Airlines is leading its introduction in the United States and plans to extend it to international routes in the future. In an internal communication, the airline emphasized that this new process not only improves the passenger experience but also maintains the security standards established by the TSA and CBP, but with more streamlined and less stressful execution.

Both CBP and TSA have been instrumental in ensuring this system maintains the highest standards

It’s important to note that Dallas Fort Worth International Airport’s role in ensuring this has been successful. The airport has played a crucial role by investing in the infrastructure and systems necessary to support OSS. This implementation not only improves its efficiency but also reaffirms its position as a global leader in airport innovation.

“TSA is constantly looking for innovative private sector solutions to enhance security and improve the passenger experience at TSA checkpoints,” said TSA Acting Administrator Ha Nguyen McNeill. “Homeland Security Secretary Noem recently announced TSA’s elimination of the mandate for passengers to remove their shoes. This effort will continue to drive a golden age of travel for future innovations by allowing private sector organizations to submit ideas or solutions that will help make airport screening faster, more secure, and easier on the traveling public”, they say in an official statement.

Finally, security, which, despite being addressed last, is the most important issue. Both CBP and TSA have been instrumental in ensuring this system maintains the highest standards while substantially improving the traveler experience. The development of OSS is an example of these agencies’ commitment to innovation and service.

With this information, if you plan to travel on one of these routes, you should be aware of this information to avoid wasting time taking the route you’re used to. And stay informed in case this measure is expanded and adapted to more airports and airlines.
