If you own a Ford Bronco Sport or Escape with a 1.5 EcoBoost engine, this safety warning directly affects you

Ford has recalled more than 694,000 Bronco Sport and Escape vehicles due to a fire risk. These compact SUVs are being recalled because a fuel injector can crack and leak, potentially causing a fire. Ford is recalling more than 694,000 vehicles due to this serious issue. Even if your car seems to be running properly, a small crack in a specific engine part could cause a fuel leak, which could pose a real safety risk. Cars are the most widely used mode of transportation in the United States, so it’s important to get your vehicle checked as soon as possible.

Letters to notify owners of affected Bronco Sport and Escape were sent on August 18

The recall involves Bronco Sports made from 2021 to 2024 and Escapes made from 2020 to 2022 with 1.5-liter engines. This is not the first time the company issues a recall, so it has already started working on a fix, and they’ve shared which vehicles are affected and how they’re handling the situation. Obviously, this is not an ideal situation for those who have purchased one of these cars.

Letters to notify owners of affected Bronco Sport and Escape were sent on August 18. In the interim, Ford dealers “will update the engine control software, free of charge.” Of course, the news will not have been well received by those affected. “A cracked fuel injector allows for fuel to leak at a high rate” onto other hot engine components, increasing the risk of fire according to the recall notice.

The earlier fixes included new software that would detect a fuel leak

Ford has already tried to fix the issue a few times, starting in November 2022, the recall notice says. Even though, this recall only includes vehicles with a 1.5-liter engine. If your vehicle has a different engine size, it’s probably not part of this recall. But, it’s recommended to check it, just in case. The earlier fixes included new software that would detect a fuel leak and disable the high-pressure fuel pump and lower the engine power, accordingly.

In total, Ford has issued three recalls related to this situation: in November 2022, in March 2024, and in March 2025. Actually, in July 2024, the company bought back a vehicle that caught fire, and noticed it had a cracked fuel injector even though it had received one of the earlier remedies. Fire damage prevented Ford from drawing any definitive conclusions about the start of the fire.

The fuel injector pumps gasoline into the engine to keep the car running

In any case, and following Ford’s instructions, it is important to remain calm. After receiving the notification, a second letter will be sent once the final remedy is available. Vehicle owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and reference recall number 25S76.

Let’s focus on the main problem. As far as we know, it’s all due to a part called the fuel injector. This part serves an important function: it pumps gasoline into the engine to keep the car running. However, in some vehicles, the fuel injector can crack or break. When this happens, a fuel leak can occur, and this is where the real problem begins.

It’s is very dangerous, so Ford is acting quickly to reduce the risk

The fact is that if that gasoline leaks into the engine compartment (the area under the hood where the engine sits) and this area is hot from the engine or exhaust system, the spilled fuel could ignite. This is very dangerous, so Ford is acting quickly to reduce the risk.

As for the previous recalls, in July 2025, Ford’s internal recall team decided to issue another recall. This time, they are asking owners of certain vehicles to bring them in for a software update. This update is completely free. It is a temporary solution while Ford works on a permanent fix to prevent fuel injector cracking in the future.
