It's official - Georgia hands out checks of up to $500 to thousands of residents for tax overruns

Georgia’s tax refund has led to residents being able to claim checks of up to $500. This massive disbursement, part of a $1.2 billion fund authorized by HB 112, is moving forward daily, although with clear caveats: outstanding debts to the state could reduce or eliminate the amount received. This program is open to people who permanently reside in Georgia.

Who is eligible for this refund?

According to the state Department of Revenue, any Georgia citizen who was a full-year resident in 2023 and 2024 and who timely filed their Georgia personal income tax return for 2023 and 2024 is eligible for a refund of up to $500.

“Thanks to the smart management of our state’s resources, we’re able to return money to hardworking Georgians who know how to use it best. In addition to accelerating the largest income tax cut in state history, this latest refund is one more way we can support the citizens of our state, their families, and their businesses, because it’s not the government’s money, it’s yours!”, Governor Brian Kemp said in a statement via X, reflecting his commitment to returning the surplus.

Taxpayers can check their eligibility using the Georgia Eligibility Tool

To receive the money now or in the coming weeks, taxpayers must have filed their tax returns for tax years 2023 and 2024 by the May 1, 2025, deadline, or by October 15, 2025, if they have an extension. Taxpayers can check their eligibility using the Georgia Eligibility Tool. To use it, taxpayers must enter their tax year, Social Security Number (SSN) or Taxpayer Identification Number, and their federal Adjusted Gross Income.

The amounts, which are not subject to state taxes, vary depending on the tax status of the individual requesting the payment. They range from $250 for single or married individuals filing separately (a couple who both file taxes can each claim a payment); $375 for single taxpayers with dependents; and $500 for couples who filed a tax return.

Who will not receive the checks

Individuals who did not file a Georgia income tax return for tax years 2023 and 2024 by the May 1 or October 15 deadline are not eligible for the refund. Those who filed their 2023 or 2024 return using an ITIN are also ineligible. Taxpayers with $0 in tax owed for tax year 2023 are also ineligible for the refund. You can find all the information about this refund here.

The Department of Revenue (DOR) reported that the process deliberately began to monitor for potential issues. Although some Georgians are expressing impatience on social media, officials assure that the vast majority of refunds will arrive by mid-August. Those who filed taxes before May 1, 2025, and do not owe taxes can expect their money in the next 6-8 weeks, as explained before.

To find out where your money is, the state of Georgia offers an online tracker that’s updated daily. All you need is your Social Security number or ITIN and your federal Adjusted Gross Income. “We’re continuing at the same pace as previous years,” the DOR emphasizes, noting that the $621 million distributed as of last week already exceeds Kemp’s initial announcement.

Community members should be on the lookout for their mail and bank statements as the state is steadily working to send out payments. Although funds will continue to be sent out processed through the summer, state officials recommend that taxpayers maintain their contact in the Department of Revenue to avoid delays receiving their funds. For residents that require help or have questions related to the funds, the Department of Revenue has provided a toll-free line and an online FAQ section. This payment forms part of the state government’s continuous efforts to enhance Georgia’s economy and provide support to its citizens.
