We’ve all seen a pigeon’s nest, especially if we live in a city or in the country. The presence of these birds is increasing in our lives, so it is necessary to control pests with safe methods that guarantee animal welfare. There are more and more initiatives and creative ideas that can be used to avoid the formation of nests at home, always respecting the integrity of the animal. Bird prevention has become a social need that the authorities should manage, not leave in the hands of the population.
Pigeons
Did you know that there are no pigeons in Antarctica or the Arctic? They’re probably all in my town. Pigeons are a species of birds called columbiforms. They have a granivore diet based on seeds, small fruits and berries. Builds their nests in high, quiet places where they keep babies until they can fly alone and feed themselves.
Pigeons and humans
No one is surprised by the growing presence of pigeons in human life. The situation has come to a somewhat borderline situation, as it has even interfered with our lives in a rather negative way. Except for some exceptions, the presence of uninvited pigeons in homes is not well received by humans. This is why different techniques have been used to keep them away from the houses and encourage them to nest elsewhere.
Methods
There are several methods that human can use to prevent pigeons from nesting in their houses. Some of them look after the animal, taking into account their welfare. However, there are other methods that must be banned because they harm and could also kill the animal.
Safe methods
- Acoustic and visual devices that mainly affect their perception, scare them away. An example would be to place a fan on the balcony, whose blades and motor noise deter birds and with them their intent to nest.
- Visual deterrents, which alter the sense of security. Place CDs hanging from a thread (which reflect the sun’s rays), aluminum foil or colored ribbons that, being moved by the wind, confuse the bird.
- It is also useful to place imitation birds of prey to prevent them from approaching.
“Must be banned” methods.
There are people who do not take animal welfare into account at all. It’s about scaring them away from our homes to prevent nesting, not hurting them or causing them greater harm. Some of the methods used you must prevent are:
- Chemical repellents.
- Poison sprayers.
- Boards with spikes.
- Catch nets.
As mentioned, the damage that can cause to birds are not only physical, but also they can become stingy without being able to eat, all this being a cause of a greater evil, because it would also affect their place in the food chain and its ecosystem.
Prevention of birds
The entity responsible for safeguarding and ensuring the welfare of animals that in domestic or wild way coexist with us humans, are the authorities. There are species of animals, including birds, which are protected because of their high extinction risk or their importance within the ecosystem. That is why we should never make unilateral decisions about pest control, because the consequences could be worse. There are animal welfare organizations, which have the power to impose fines and penalties on people who endanger or threaten their welfare.
It is important to take into account the importance of protecting the animal and plant species that surround us, not only for the possible fine, but to avoid infringing unnecessary harm to species that are totally harmless.
