The Social Security Administration (SSA) of the United States is betting on a digital transformation of the social insurance card. The US Government has alerted the population about the importance of not sharing the card data with any unofficial entity. That is why the SSA has launched digital identification in order to protect the identity and strengthen the security of data beneficiaries. Loosing your Social Security card and becoming a victim of a scam is easier when you use the physical format. Public services are preparing for this new initiative, so that all bureaucratic procedures can be done through digital identification.
Be careful with your Social Security card
On the one hand, it recommends using the card only when necessary, avoiding always carrying it with you. In addition, it is becoming less and less obligatory to present the physical card. Knowing the memory number is more than enough. If you still prefer to carry it, be sure to keep it in a safe place.
On the other hand, they advise you not to share your social security number with anyone. If requested, make sure why it is necessary, for what purpose it was used and above all, who requests it. Make sure you do not carry documentation that contains your personal number, as anyone could have access to the in case of loss of such documentation.
What should I do if i want to replace my Social Security card?
If for any reason you need to replace your SSA card, the process is very simple.
- Online. This process begins (and often ends) online. Visit the Social Security website and ask for the best way to apply.
- If you require a visit to an office, you will be able to schedule one online and complete the process by showing your documents there.
- If you can’t self-schedule, then contact the Social Security by phone and they will do it for you.
Remember! Do not show up at a Social Security office without an appointment!
Keep your SSA card safe
There are many situations in which it is no longer necessary to present the Social Security card physically. However, we do not know many of them. That is why the SSA administration has prepared a factsheet with all the necessary information. This will help you know when to submit it and how to store it safely.

How can I protect it?
The infographic gives you two essential tips:
- Before someone else opens an account in your name, open it yourself. This way, no one can impersonate you even if they have your card number.
-
Not always carrying the card reduces the chances of losing it or being stolen. Do not carry documents where your Social Security details are visible. If you are asked about your data, remember not to share it with unofficial entities.
