The Social Security (SSA) has developed a new method to speed up the procedures related to this system. You can now update changes in your income, calculate benefits such as Supplementary Income Insurance (SSI), Social Security for Disability (SSDI) or apply for a different type of benefit. You just need to enter the My Social Security site and you will have access to all these features and more.
Access to My Social Security
Let´s go it step by step. You first need to access the Social Security website. Access your profile. If you do not have one, register and activate it. When inside the system, search for the “Report income changes” section and fill in the form with the information you request: type and income, total amount, date you start to receive them and attach necessary documentation if relevant. In order to reduce the number of errors and speed up procedures, the website has automatic validation systems that will confirm whether your transfer has been carried out correctly or not. You can also receive payment vouchers or employment letters through the system, without the need to move to any office.

Motivations for this improvement
Until now, all the formalities related to Social Security required that the person concerned or legal representative had to move to the physical offices, or had to be attended by telephone, causing a breakdown.
Waiting times were exorbitant for simple procedures which the person concerned could carry out without assistance. Therefore, the option of digitalizing these procedures and processes was evaluated, freeing the burden of waiting leading to a more fluid service. Salaries, or other additional income data can now be updated in real time.
Beneficiaries
Anyone who has to go through a social security process will benefit from this new improvement. However, the SSI beneficiaries, whose monthly amount is adjusted directly according to the reported monthly income will save time and reduce the margin of error. Those who receive the Social Security for Disability (SSDI) and start working, also benefit. We cannot forget pensioners who receive part of their pension but continue to declare other sources of income.
What if I don’t update my income?
This type of data and tax information should always be updated to avoid consequences. Interruptions in your payments, penalties or undue payments can be carried out if you don’t keep the Social Security updated, either in a face-to-face office, by telephone or online through this tool. What´s more, if any decompensation is detected between the quantities declared and recorded, you would be penalized.
These inconsistencies can be detected as the Social Security and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regularly cross-check your data to verify that the information provided is correct.
Benefits of reporting your incomes on time
In addition to avoiding payments and penalties, there are other benefits. It helps you keep your income monthly amount updated and avoid overpayments. It also allows you to maintain eligibility for other benefits such as Medicaid Medical Insurance, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or rental subsidies.
The Social Security has been developing, since 2024, new different improvements in digital procedures, in order to eliminate unnecessary paper-work, Giving more power to the citizen over his procedures and reducing waiting times.
In conclusion, this measure to improve social security has been very successful and beneficial. It meets its goal 100% and reduces tedious visits to their offices to just a few minutes at the computer.
